COURSES

STARTS 1 JULY 2010
Thursdays 7–8pm: Yin yoga
six-session course: 1, 8 (no class 15), 22, 29 July; 5, 12 August
Suitable for everyone from beginners with limited fitness and flexibility to experienced yogis. Yin is a slow, passive form of yoga, consisting of simple, accessible postures. These are held for an extended period of time (usually around five minutes) to enable deep opening, especially in the hips and spine. The teaching in this course is also informed by bodymind principles from Phoenix Rising yoga therapy and from somatic movement practice, so there is an emphasis on looking inwards and fostering awareness of what’s happening in the whole person through in the body. This is a relaxing and revitalising form of yoga, offering a chance to slow down, pay attention and take time to focus on yourself.
St Mark’s Centre (activity room), Greenwich South St, Greenwich SE10 8TY (entrance in Ashburnham Place). 5 mins Greenwich mainline / DLR.

WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

THE MOVING LABORATORY
AUTHENTIC DANCE

Sunday 19 September, 2–5pm
The Moving Laboratory is a context for the evolution of authentic dance. It is open to anyone with a willingness to move, explore, be present and engage in an ongoing investigation of what it means to be in a human body. No dance experience or aptitude is necessary. We are currently feeling into how we can witness our own dance and the dances of others in the group, cultivating our capacity to observe clearly, communicate skilfully and ‘see’ from the heart. Because this is a form in development, the workshops are low-cost. At the moment, newcomers are welcome; the intention for the future is to close the group so that we can work together more intimately.
Millennium Performing Arts, 29 Thomas St, Woolwich SE18 6HU (opposite the back door of Marks and Spencers). 5 mins Woolwich Arsenal mainline / DLR.
£8 (£7 concessions).

ADVANCE BOOKING ONLY. Please contact me.

THE OPEN SPACE
AUTHENTIC DANCE

Next one on a Sunday, 2
–4pm, in the autumn: date tbc
The Open Space is an invitation to come and just dance. This is an unfacilitated authentic dance event, the intention being to allow the dance to evolve spontaneously from the group without external intervention. The parameters of the form are created by the music, and I do some basic space-holding. Everyone is welcome, including those new to authentic dance. No dance experience or aptitiude is necessary; however, you do need to have the capacity to stay present to your own dance and to the dances emerging from others in the room. If this kind of work is new to you, please contact me before coming along.
Millennium Performing Arts, 29 Thomas St, Woolwich SE18 6HU (opposite the back door of Marks and Spencers). 5 mins Woolwich Arsenal mainline / DLR.
£9 (£8 concessions).

DROP-IN.

ONE-TO-ONE YOGA

Private yoga sessions are available by arrangement at my yoga space in Woolwich. The cost is £40 an hour. Please contact to discuss.

WORKPLACE YOGA

Group classes can be arranged at your workplace – a great way to help you and your colleagues deal with stress and foster a calm and positive atmosphere at work. Please contact to discuss.

CONCESSIONS POLICY

Regular concessions are offered to people on an income of less than £200 gross a week. This is a little flexible either way, depending on whether you are supporting others financially and whether you are partly supported by someone else (for example a partner with a higher income) please use your honest judgement. No proof of income is necessary; however, I ask you to be aware of the following money yoga:

• Classes and events have to be financially viable in order to take place.
• The giving and receiving of teaching, therapy and facilitation revolves around a balanced exchange of energies.
• This work is the way I make my living.
• Among the ethical foundations of yoga is satya: ‘honesty’.

In addition to regular concessions, extra-low-cost places are available for those who are on a very low income and would not otherwise be able to afford to attend a class or event, even at the concessionary rate. If this is applicable to you, please contact me to discuss.

YOGA MATS AND BAGS

You can buy an ecoyoga mat from me at a lower price than from yoga shops and sites. Made of latex and jute, ecoyoga mats work well for most bodies and styles of yoga, and absorb sweat, so you don’t slip when practising astanga. Ecoyoga mats are biodegradable. Cost £25.

If you are allergic to latex or want a cheaper more basic mat, I also have some synthetic mats at lower than shop price. These are not the cheap plastic mats that you can buy in supermarkets and sports shops (and which are often pretty useless for yoga), but proper yoga mats which will continue to be non-slip as they wear in. Cost £15.

I also have fairly traded mat bags made by Yogamalai in south India. The bags are attractive, durable and waterproof, and have an internal pocket and an adjustable shoulder strap. Cost £14.

Please contact me or ask at a class if you would like a mat or mat bag.

ALLERGIES

Incense or essential oils are used at most classes. If this is a problem for you, please let me know.

If you’re allergic to latex and borrowing a mat, please let me know at the class, so I can give you one made of something else. Latex mats are widely used by students in the class, so if you have an anaphylactic reaction to latex, talk to me before you come to a class.

Please don’t wear perfume or aftershave to classes, and as far as practical avoid other chemical-based products, as some people may be allergic to them or find them unpleasant.

TRAVEL TO CLASSES

All the venues are within a 10-minute walk of frequent rail / DLR and bus connections. If at all possible, please leave your car at home and use public transport, cycle or walk to class. Thank you.
